"When I joined the Academy as a student member back in the late 1970's, it was mainly for the journals - still the best deal around in my opinion. Trained as an organizational psychologist, I started my career on a multidisciplinary path. I found that my AOM membership provided access to colleagues unlikely to attend psychological meetings, and that helped me to expand collaborations. When I joined the National Institutes of Health late in my career, AOM offered the most fertile ground of any professional organization for encouraging grant applications to study health service delivery. In 2012, I retired from NIH. AOM was right there again with the new Community of Academy Senior Scholars (CASS) to keep me engaged professionally. CASS enables me to contribute to the professional organization that has always been there for me."

Tom Hilton is an organizational psychologist. He retired in 2012 after completing careers in both the US Navy and the Civil Service (Including the FAA, the White House, and the National Institutes of Health). His research interests were mainly in organizational climate and culture assessment which included considerable work in health services delivery organizations. Over the years, he oversaw the FAA-wide personnel survey, established a Navy-wide personnel survey coordination center at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, and headed the White House team that developed the first government-wide federal employee survey, which explored the impact of reinventing government initiatives. That survey created the infrastructure and proof-of-concept for the OPM annual Viewpoint Survey. At the time of his retirement, Tom was Science Officer for the NIH Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), the first comprehensive patient symptom self-report measure to employ computerized adaptive testing technology to reduce patient burden and enhance reliability. Tom signed on with CASS because he saw it as a great way to stay involved in AOM and to connect with other retirees. He continues to consult for DOD, and NIH, and various PROMIS research projects. He and his partner Ivo shuttle regularly between homes in Bulgaria and Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.
